While three men's Test matches are lined up for Boxing Day in Africa and Down Underrich 888, two other prominent cricket fixtures are set to begin on the same day in New Zealand. The upcoming edition of Women's Super Smash will celebrate the 20th season of T20 cricket in New Zealand. The league will thus have a nostalgic hue, what with all teams wearing retro-style jerseys, honouring the first-ever T20 international match between New Zealand and Australia at Eden Park two whole decades back.

The Women's Super Smash was first called the New Zealand Women’s T20 competition, before being rebranded two seasons later. Defending champions Wellington Blaze are the most successful team in the league’s history with eight titles, followed by the Canterbury Magicians (4).

Women's Super Smash 2024-25 Format

The women's T20 league comprises six teams: Auckland Hearts, Canterbury Magicians, Wellington Blaze, Central Hinds, Northern Districts and Otago Sparks. There will be a preliminary stage and the playoffs, which include the final. After double round-robin games on a home-and-away basis, the top three teams make it to the playoffs.

While the top-ranked team will advance straight to the summit meeting, the second and third-placed teams will lock horns in the eliminator. The winner proceeds to the final. Every win will award teams four points, while no results and ties will give both sides two points.

There is no Super Over in the league phase, but the knockout playoffs will have the provision for them.

Women's Super Smash 2024-25 Schedule

The league phase begins with a clash between Northern Brave and Auckland Hearts on December 26. Each team will play the other five twice in the league stage that ends on January 30, 2025, with the last game between Wellington Blaze and Norther Brave in Wellington.

India, the most successful team in the competition, now have five titles, including back-to-back triumphs in 2023 and 2024. The victory adds to their bronze medal secured at the Paris Olympic Games last month.

After a goalless first quarter, Korea struck just 36 seconds into the second quarter with Jungjun Lee finding the net due to a mistake from Pakistan goalkeeper Abdullah Ishtiyaq Khan. The goal remained the difference between the two teams till the half-time.

The 30 league games will be followed by the knockout playoffs. The eliminator will be played on February 1 at the Basin Reserve and the final on February 2 at the same venue. You can check out the full schedule HERE.
